FARGO MEMORIAL HONOR GUARD
Most common belief of the average Citizen is that at Military Funerals the rifle squad fires a 21 gun salute. Even though a standard Honor Guard Rifle Team is comprised of 7 members, firing 3 times each, which in fact ends up totaling 21 rounds fired. The fact is, we actually execute the 3 Volley Salute.
Wait!... What!? Ok,...Here's the difference.
3 Volley Salute
The three rifle volley is rendered at Military Honors Funeral. It consists of no less than three and no more than seven rifles firing three volleys in memory of the fallen.
The original history comes from the Roman era that at the end of the day of battle when the field of battle was cleared, if the soldier removing the slain soldier knew the name of the soldier, then they would call his name three times into the night as a form of remembering their sacrifice.
Typically three fired cartridges are placed into the folded flag prior to presentation to the next of kin; the cartridges signify "duty, honor, and sacrifice.”
21 Gun Salute
Today, the U.S. military fires a 21-gun salute in honor of a national flag, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family, and the president, ex-presidents and president-elect of the United States. The 21-gun salute is also fired at noon on George Washington's birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and the day of the funeral of a president, ex-president or president-elect.
